South Derby Circular

Saturday 15th December 2024

What a fabulous day out we had.

Only one guest, which was disappointing, but this meant Lucy had our undivided attention.

Not that she needed it as she spotted and identified loads of stuff.

The sun shone and very little wind brought the birds out in good numbers, which was a nice change from the previous couple of weekends.

We has intended visiting 5 sites. One I knew was water logged so we dismissed that one.

We spend a short while at Tucklesholme Nature reserve to see if anything nice had dropped into the water. There were lots of Pochard and Tufted Duck along with a surprise flyover from a Woodcock. We then went to Drakelow and we spend far longer here that intended as it was full of great birds. Green Woodpecker as we drove in, Kingfisher and Water Rail within the first 10 minutes along with Great White Egret and Goldeneye. We were running out of light so decided to skip Spring Wood and head to Willington. Good decision as we bagged a Cattle Egret and Marsh Harrier, my first for Derbyshire.

See the full list below.
